The Smashing Pumpkins, Summoning, Burzum, Drudkh, Joy Divison, The Chameleons, Slowdive, Ride, Ataraxia, Dead Can Dance, M83, etc..

Puoi darci qualche informazione su cosa vuol rappresentare quel disegno?

– It’s been three years since “Souvenirs d’un autre monde” What has Alcest done in this period of time?

– During this time I worked on Amesoeurs album and composed/recorded  “Écailles de Lune” album, I was pretty active actually.

– “Écailles de lune” represents a substancial change to its predecessor. It’s fashinating, melodic and well-constructed. Some things have disappeared, like the acoustic parts, everything has more impact. There’s a partial return to your black metal origins. How did you end up with this result?

– There was not any real acoustic part on “Souvenirs…”, clean parts we recorded directly from the folk guitar to the gear. “Écailles de lune” has more clean parts than the previous album. I didn’t return to black metal elements in a conscious way, music on the new album is different because the concept also changed a bit from “Souvenirs…” one.

– Could we say that this change influenced your way to write songs?

– On the new album I had a more progressive and complex approach of composing, a bit like it was for “Le Secret” EP. The songs are telling a story.

– Listening to the album, the first thing that comes in mind are Opeth, in particular the album “Morningrise”. Does Opeth have an influence in your music? Which are your favourite bands?

– I admit I don’t know well Opeth music. My fave bands are The Smashing Pumpkins, Summoning, Burzum, Drudkh, Joy Divison, The Chameleons, Slowdive, Ride, Ataraxia, Dead Can Dance, M83, etc…

– Have you ever thought of using electronic soundscapes in your music?

– I don’t think I will ever use electronic soundscapes in Alcest music, it doesn’t fit the project’s universe which tend to have an intemporal aspect.

– The album cover is probably one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. Can you give us an explanation on its meaning?

– In each interview I am having a question about it. Yes I also think  this cover is exceptional, we are not used to see this kind of work for records. It is the perfect illustration of “Écailles De Lune” lyrics.  It’s a story about a man sitting front of the sea at night and thinking about his life, the fact he can’t find any interest anymore in his earthly existence, nothing and nobody that could give him joy. He falls in love with the night, being captivated by the voices of the waves and the spirits of the sea. He goes swimming in the depth, all surrounded by aquatic guardian spirits for finally having a serene sleep in the bottoms of the sea and never coming back in the real world.

– Your music has a sharp cut film. What film do you prefer that has as soundtrack “Écailles de lune”?

– Humm, I don’t know… “Abyss” maybe (smile, ndr).

– Have you ever felt the need to have your own band and not do everything by yourself?

– Yes, I felt it because doing everything by myself can be very exhausting and I have more pressure than if it was a real band with several composers, etc… But for Alcest I will always compose all the music, this project has a precise concept and aim that not anyone can get.

– Soon your tour will start, will you be with a band or by yourself?

– When Alcest is making concerts, I can say it’s a band.

– Have you already thought about the musical direction of your next album?

– I have a few riffs and ideas but not any precise musical direction yet, but I am composing this days, I guess the shapes of the new record’s concept and directing line will be drawn soon.
