Intervista a Jasmine Rodgers (Bôa) Ita/Eng

Puoi raccontarci la storia del gruppo dagli esordi fino a ”Get There”, vostro ultimo album?

Registrammo così “The Race of Thousand Camels” e il singolo Duvet fu usato in “serial experiments lain” (anime giapponese, n.d.t.). In seguito decidemmo di fare cose da soli, registrammo e finanziammo “Get There”.

– Come nacque Duvet?

– Avete avuto successo negli Stati Uniti e in Giappone, perché in Europa no?

Come mai?

– Ritorneranno mai i Bôa? Magari per qualche evento speciale…

– Sempre possibile.

– The Black Keys, Villagers, LadyHawke, P.J. Harvey, Blakroc, The Heavy.

Bôa are an indie-rock band formed in London in the first half of ’90s and in activity until 2005. Ten years of music, two albums (the excellent “The Race of a Thousand Camels” in 1998 and “Get There” in 2005) and an unforgettable and perfect hit – opening theme of the beautiful anime “serial experiments lain” – Duvet. Jasmine Rodgers, daughter of the most famous Paul, was the lead singer of the band. We managed to contact her after a long web wandering.

– Let’s start talking about Bôa, your band with the drummer Ed Herten, the keyboards player Paul Turrel and the guitarist Steve Rodgers, your brother. Can you tell us the history of this band from the beginning to your last album, “Get There”?

– Steve and Ed were at school together, Alex and Ed were neighbours, Ed went to University with Paul and Ben was a friend from a previous band with Alex. Steve and Ed decided to form a band and that’s how everyone got together. They came to my family home to practise and heard me singing and asked if I would like to sing with them- then they couldn’t get rid of me.

After that Ed decided to concentrate on his studies and has become very successful. Lee had been in a previous band with Alex and was invited to join. After that Bôa became much more “rocky”.  We were signed to Polystar with Fuji as our publisher. From that we recorded “The Race of a Thousand Camels” and our single Duvet was used in “serial experiments lain”.  Our music was supposed to be released in the UK but it didn’t work out that way. Consequently we signed with a US company called Pioneer and they put out our album with a few extra songs and we called it “Twilight”. After that we decided to do things our own way and recorded and funded “Get There”.

– How was your experience with Bôa?

– Amazing and fun. I love everyone from that band and I always will- I joined when I was 16 and learnt lots through them all. From muddy Glastonbury festivals through to wierd tours in Los Angeles, to simple long walks in the British countryside, if I could choose anyone then these people would be the ones to share that with. Additionally teh creative process was hard work but always interesting!

Duvet was your biggest hit, also because it was used as opening track for a beautiful anime “serial experiments lain”. On YouTube it’s one of the most revisited song from the users. Did you expected such a big success for Duvet?

– When we recorded it, we all thought it came out very powerfully, but we didn’t think it would be as popular as it is. At the same time, we would have liked the whole album to get that kind of recognition!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_dqcLuLou4

– How was Duvet born?

– Like all of these songs: a long gestation period, heavy pain and then lots of growing!

Duvet brought you at the Otakon, a fan convention in the USA focusing on East Asian popular culture. What are your memories about that experience?

– Great fun. The organisers were fantastic and kind, the people were dedicated and enthusiastic. We met some incredible manga artists as well and I had my first ever Mango Colada, that was nice.

– Later, I suppose in 2002, the song Near me appears in the soundtrack of “Armitage III”. Can we consider it as a Boa’s song or as one of your very first compositions as a solo?

– It’s one of my first published compositions.

– Bôa had a huge success in the U.S.A. and in Japan, why not in Europe?

– Unfortunately the record company did not release in Europe, although we thought that was going to happen.

– Your solo-carrier: when has this new phase of your artistic life started?

– I’ve always written on my own as well as with Bôa. When everyone started to do their own thing I decided to study for a while and do things I hadn’t done because I had been in a band since being a teenager. After that I kept missing music so I just started writing more and more. So the answer is the last couple of years I think.

– Have you ever thought about a chance in your sound? Maybe playing again with a band, like with Boa…

– I will if it feels right. Change in sound? I love dubstep and electro (I covered Chase and Status with Liam Bailey’s Blind Faith at the Venice Biennale this year), hip-hop and heavy-rock. I don’t know!

– How did you find the music business after the “Boa-years”? I noticed that you have no label, right now. Why?

– I think it’s where it should be. Smaller musicians have bigger opportunities. Although the very famous celebrity musicians are still gods, there is more hope that other musicians can live through their music now. I think that’s positive. Also, collaborations with different genres are happening all the time. I like it now.

– What do we have to expect from you in the future? And what do you expect from your work as musician? Is your approach to the music chanced, during these years?

– I think I’m more relaxed. I have less expectations and just enjoy the process. I hope to record more albums and I want them to get better. I am also looking forward to collaborations…

– Is a return of Bôa possible? Maybe for some special events…

– Always possible.

– What can we find in Jasmine’s music player in these days?

– The Black Keys, Villagers, LadyHawke, P.J. Harvey, Blakroc, The Heavy.
