– Partiamo dalle tue origini.

Born in 1986, daughter of a jazz drummer and granddaughter of a poet, she started her carrer as a model and photographer… And now also a musician. Hannah Cohen seems to be an extremely resourceful girl. So, guitar at hand, she gave birth to her debut album, “Child Bride“, an old-folkish-sounding album, but with delicate and elegant tunes. We take this chance to know better this interesting and multi-talented artist.

– Let’s begin from your origins. You come from a very fertile ground, artistically speaking, and you have worked as a model and photographer for a while: How much did all this influence the development of your
music?

– It is difficult for me to measure how much it has all influenced me but I know I am grateful for all the strange, sad and beautiful things I’ve been exposed to.

– What made you decide to get a guitar and start do write songs? Is there a particular album or song that gave you inspiration for this choice?

Most of my friends are musicians and I was really drawn to the guitar so I just started teaching myself how to play.  From there the songs started to come and write themselves. I was listening to a lot of Neil Young when I first started to play the guitar.

– How was the impact with the world of music? What made you enthusiastic and what disappointed you?

– I don’t listen to a lot of new music these days.  Mostly listen to vinyl records from the 60’s and 70’s Brazil.  I just got a great record recently that I’ve been listening to a lot, the Japanese guitar pioneer Takeshi Terauchi.

– “Child Bride”, your debut album, is produced by Thomas Bartlett and released by Bella Union, how did these two “adoptions” came to be?

– Thomas and I met a few years ago right around the time when I was writing my first songs. I remember playing him the song Don’t Say,  I had just wrote it and we were hanging out at my apartment having drinks and I sang for him and I remember him saying “I want to produce your record,  I know exactly what I want to do with you” and I remember really trusting and believing him.  It took us a while to actually get into the studio together but once we did, we knew that working together was something we really enjoyed.  When we finished the record last summer we had a meeting with Simon Raymonde , he was in town and we met for tea.  I am such a huge fan of the Cocteau Twins so I was more excited to be meeting him than talking about my record.

– What can you tell us about the album’s title?

– I had a fascination with the power of the word “child bride”. Being powerless and powerful at the same time.  I really connected with that.

– Which track are you most proud of?

– It changes for me all the time. I just re-recorded the song Sunrise and it has taken a whole new meaning for me. Right now I really like Sorry.  I just recently made a new music video for.

– The musical scene is constantly evolving: which new artists do you find most interesting?

– Frank Ocean.

– The web is, for musicians, an excellent showcase (also thanks to webstreaming) but at the same time a place where the artist is subjected to superficial and dismissive comments. What is your relationship with the virtual life?

– I am pretty technologically challenged so I use these things pretty sparingly .

– The video for The Crying Game is the perfect summary of simplicity and elegance which is also a characteristic of your music. What can you tell us about this clip?

– It was directed by my dear friend Matthu Placek, he had the idea that we would have the video be a one take shot. It was a very long video shoot, sort of like water torture.

– Finally, do you have any projects for the future?

– Working on writing new songs and hopefully will be recording soon. Also teaching myself to shred on the guitar.
