Intervista ai Witchcraft Ita/Eng

Lo scorso settembre è uscito “Legend“, quarto lavoro degli svedesi Witchcraft. Nei cinque lunghi anni trascorsi dopo “The Alchemist”, nella band guidata da Magnus Pelander sono cambiate molte cose: una nuova line-up, una nuova etichetta (dopo la Rise Above di Lee Dorrian, una major: la Nuclear Blast) e un suono più robusto che in passato (prodotto da Jens Bogren), influenzato maggiormente da Led Zeppelin e Black Sabbath. Ne abbiamo piacevolmente discusso con Ola Henriksson, bassista della band.

– L’album doveva uscire, secondo quanto da voi dichiarato, nel settembre del 2010. A che cosa è dovuto questo ritardo?

– Perché John e Fredrik lasciarono la band, e non abbiamo trovato i nuovi membri fino alla primavera del 2011.

– La line-up dei Witchcraft è cambiata. Ti va di presentarci i nuovi arrivati?

– Simon Solomon, chitarra: Uno dei migliori musicisti che abbia mai conosciuto. Ha suonato in qualche band locale prima di unirsi a noi.

Tom Jondelius, chitarra: L’ho visto suonare con la sua band quando aveva 18 anni e rimasi sconvolto. Ora ha solo 21 anni ma è un chitarrista fantastico!

Oscar Johansson, batteria: Conoscevo le sue abilità da batterista da molto tempo ed è un piacere suonare con lui. Avevo intenzione di reclutarlo prima ma era impegnato con altre band.

– Come si è sviluppato il processo compositivo? Vi siete sentiti sotto pressione nel realizzare “Legend”?

– Questa volta non eravamo sotto pressione e credo si veda dal modo in cui è uscito l’album. Magnus aveva idee grezze per le canzoni e le abbiamo raffinate fino a farle diventare i diamanti che sono ora.

– Com’è avvenuto l’incontro con la Nuclear Blast? Una decisione sofferta quella di pubblicare l’album per loro, invece che con la Rise Above?

– Sentivamo di aver bisogno di un cambiamento quando la Nuclear Blast mostrò dell’interesse e decidemmo di firmare un contratto con loro. Rise Above ci ha aiutato molto, ma a volte bisogna cambiare.

– C’è un legame comune tra le canzoni, un concept alla base?

– I testi hanno un significato, ma dovrai interpretarli da solo, così come ho fatto io.

– “Witchcraft”, “Firewood”, “The Alchemist” e ora “Legend”. Perchè avete scelto questo un titolo?

– È un titolo forte che genera domande e dubbi e questo è bene. Credo che sia un titolo che può essere visto in vari modi differenti e la gente può interpretare a modo proprio la “leggenda”.

– Qual è il significato del falco raffigurato in copertina?

– Il falco è un disegno che Andreas Norrefjord ha fatto per noi dopo aver sentito le canzoni. Il simbolo? Significa tutto ciò che tu voglia che significhi.

– Una caratterista importante del nuovo album è il suono. “Legend” è stato prodotto da Jens Bogren, noto per i suoi lavori con Katatonia, Opeth e Ihsahn, giusto per citarne qualcuno. Quali sono i motivi che vi hanno portati a questa scelta?

– Volevamo un suono più pesante e sapevo che Jens era la scelta perfetta per questo lavoro. È un grande produttore professionista e vive nella nostra città, quindi non dovevamo viaggiare molto per registrare.

– Che cosa vi ha spinto a scegliere It’s Not Because of You come pezzo d’anteprima? È uno dei brani più energici e radiofonici da voi composto: secondo me è destinato a essere uno dei vostri maggiori successi, ma al tempo stesso ha diviso i vostri ascoltatori una volta pubblicato.

– Grazie! È energetica ed accattivante, non è un buon motivo? Credo sia un’ottima canzone e credo che a causa del suo sound alcune persone hanno reagito negativamente.

– Che cosa ne pensi delle nuove tecnologie e dei metodi moderni di fruizione della musica?

– Non importa cosa penso perché la tecnologia continuerà a svilupparsi. Le persone possono ascoltare musica in qualunque modo vogliono, ma se vogliono apprezzare l’opera per intero devono capire che la maggior parte degli artisti crea album, non singoli. Il modo migliore per apprezzare il nostro album è su un vinile.

– A breve uscirà “Lights Out”, il nuovo album dei Graveyard, e nel frattempo è stato pubblicato il nuovo EP degli Orchid, “Heretic”, un’altra scommessa vincente della Nuclear Blast. Tre gruppi che, secondo me, hanno rinvigorito l’hard rock negli ultimi anni. Un tour insieme sarebbe l’ideale, non trovi?

– (Ride, ndr) Grazie, forse. Vedremo cos’ha in serbo il futuro.

– Perché la gente, secondo te, sta rispondendo in modo così massiccio al “ritorno” dell’hard rock e della psichedelica?

– Non ne ho idea, ma penso che la gente sia interessata dalla purezza e l’onestà di quel tipo di musica. È musica con un cuore e un anima.

Last September “Legend“, the fourth album by the Swedish band Witchcraft, was released. During the five long years since “The Alchemist” the band led by Magnus Pelander has seen many changes: a new line-up, a new label (Nuclear Blast, after Lee Dorrian’s Rise Above) and a new, tougher sound (produced by Jens Borgen), mainly influenced by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. We pleasantly talked about it with Ola Henriksson, bass player of the band.

– The album was meant to be released, standing to what you said, in September 2010. Why the delay?

– Because John and Fredrik quit the band and we didn’t find the new members until the spring of 2011.

– There is a new line-up in Witchcraft now. Can you introduce us to the new members?

– Simon Solomon, guitar: One of the best musicians I’ve ever met. Played in a few local bands before joining us.

Tom Jondelius, guitar: Saw him playing live with his band when he was 18 and was blown away. Only 21 years old but an awesome guitarist!

Oscar Johansson, drums: Have known about his drumming skills a long time and it’s a pleasure to play with him. Had plans to recruit him earlier but he’s been occupied by other bands.

– How did the writing process develop? Did you feel under pressure in writing “Legend”?

– We had no pressure this time and I think that shows in how the album turned out. Magnus had rough ideas for the songs and we polished them to the diamonds they are now.

– How did you meet Nuclear Blast? Was it a hard decision to release an album with them instead of Rise Above?

– We felt that we wanted a change and when Nuclear Blast showed interest we decided to sign for them. Rise Above have helped us a lot but sometimes you need change.

– Is there a link between the songs, a concept?

– The lyrics have a meaning but you will have to interpret them for yourself as I have done.

– “Witchcraft”, “Firewood”, “The Alchemist” and now “Legend”. Why have you chosen this title?

– It is a strong title that brings up questions and makes people wonder and that is always good. I think that it’s a title that can be seen in many different ways and people can make it their own “legend”.

– What does the symbol on the album cover mean?

– The hawk is a design that Andreas Norrefjord did for us after hearing the songs. The symbol? It means whatever you want it to mean.

– An important feature of the new album is the sound. “Legend” was produced by Jens Borgen, known for his work with Katatonia, Opeth and Ihsahn, just to mention some. Can you explain to us this choice?

– We wanted a heavier sound and I knew Jens was the perfect choice for that job. He is a super professional producer and he lives in our home town meaning we didn’t have to travel far to record.

– Why did you choose It’s not Because of You as a preview for the album? It’s one of the most catchy and energetic songs written by you: I think it’s going to be one of your best songs, but in the meantime it divided the fans once released.

– Thank you! It’s energetic and catchy is a good reason isn’t it? I think it’s an excellent song and I believe it’s the sound that made some people react negative to it.

– What do you think about new technologies and the modern way to listen to music?

– It doesn’t matter what I think because technology will keep developing. People can listen in any way they want but if they want the whole picture they should understand that most artist create albums and not singles. Our album is best listened to on a vinyl record.

– The new album by Graveyard “Lights Out” will be out soon, and Orchid’s new EP “Heretic” was released, another winning bet for Nuclear Blast. Three bands, in my opinion, that have strengthened hard rock music in the last few years. A tour together would be ideal, don’t you think?

– (Laughs, ndr) Thanks and maybe. We’ll see what the future holds.

– Why, in your opinion, there is such huge feedback about the “return” of hard rock and “psychedelic” music?

– I have no idea but my guess is that people are appealed by the purity and honesty of that kind of music. It is music with heart and soul.
